(#167895) Base Camps 1955 [cover title]. SIERRA CLUB. 1955 BASE CAMP.

Base Camps 1955 [cover title]. N.p., n.d. [1955]. 21.7 x 28.2 cm, pp. [1-4] 1-269 [270: blank] [1-14: list of participants for all five base camps] [note: erratically paginated], errata leaves laid in, 45 plates, other drawings in the text, profiles in the text, 4 maps, mimeographed, pictorial wrappers, cloth tape spine. First edition. A keepsake for the three 1955 Sierra Club Base Camps: three sessions at Minaret Base Camps (Minarets Wilderness Area southeast of Yosemite National Park), Kern-Milestone Wilderness Camp (Sequoia National Park, Kern Basin, Kings Kern Divide and Great Western Divide), and Rainier Base Camp. Miscellany of campfire entertainment, poetry, essays, accounts of hikes and climbs, and reports, including "Upper Kern Canyon Runs the Gamut of Ecology" by Peter Raven, pp. 145a-146 with illustrations. Of major importance is part IV, a detailed "Guide to Kern Canyon" by Oliver Kehrlein and others, pp. 211-269, intended to be "as complete a guide to the Kern Basin as possible." Many of the photographs were taken by noted photographer James McBride. Compiled under the general editorship of Oliver Kehrlein. The genesis of the base camps were Sierra Club Annual Outings, organized by William W. Colby, held in Tuolumne Meadows in 1901 and Kings Canyon in 1902. The camps were established in 1940 and held annually save for the war years 1943 and 1944. Apparently, a miscellany was prepared for all but the 1945 Base Camp. The last Sierra Club Base Camp miscellany, prepared for the 1957 Base Camps, includes general editor Kehrlein's historical summary "How Base Camp Just Growed," pages 1-15. Provenance: Ownership stamp of Berkeley author and environmentalist Roy Ramseier on the inside front cover. Small splits to cloth at spine ends, edges just a bit worn, small stain on front cover, a very good copy. (#167895).
