(#167899) Das Yosémite Thal. Californien. RUDOLF CRONAU.
Das Yosémite Thal. Californien.

Das Yosémite Thal. Californien. Leipzig: Verlag von T. O. Weigel, n.d. [copyright 1885]. Lithograph (by the collotype process) on sheet measuring 20x28.2 cm (7 7/8 x 11 1/8 inches), tipped onto a larger gray paper mount, 30.3x45 cm (12 x 17 3/4 inches) with borders and letter press in brown. Text on mount reads: "Das Yosémite Thal. / Californien / 19 / Verlag von T. O. Weigel, Leipzig. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1885, by / Dr. O. V. Deuster, / in the office of the Library of Congress Washington, D. C. Lichtdruck von Römmier & Jonas, Dresden." A triptych illustrating three Yosemite geological features: Cathedral Rock, Half Dome and Bridal Veil Fall, and Nevada Fall. Rudolf Daniel Ludwig Cronau (1855-1939) was a German-American painter, illustrator and journalist well known in Germany for his illustrations, articles and books about the American West. A companion print, "Yosemite Fall in Yosemite [V]al., Californien," plate 20 from VON WUNDERLAND ZU WUNDERLAND is held by the Bancroft Library. VON WUNDERLAND ZU WUNDERLAND, published in Leipzig between 1885 and 1887, has 50 collotype scenes of America affixed to gray mounts. This is a plate from that work, or possibly a separately issued plate (as is the case with many pictorial works, like PICTURESQUE AMERICA and PICTURESQUE CALIFORNIA, for which prints could be purchased individually). Mount has minor chipping and a tear along the bottom edge; image has a little bubbling at upper right from mounting; the print is sharp and attractive. No separate print reported by OCLC or DLC. Complete copies of WUNDERLAND ZU WUNDERLAND are rare (and expensive); separate prints are uncommon. Professionally repaired, matted and framed. (#167899).
