Big Trees, Calaveras Grove. After John R. Key. Boston: L. Prang & Co., 1874. Chromolithograph, 36.2x18.5 cm (14x7 inches), mounted on board. Affixed to the board's verso is a "Prang's American Chromos" label and a "List of Prang's Chromos. April 1st, 1874." Copyright in the stone, if any, not present or obscured due to age and/or old frame shadow; copyright 1873 on the title label affixed to the verso of the mount. This chromolithograph is part of "Prang's American Chromos" series, fourteen of which (as of 1 April 1874) are California views after John R. Key. All the views in this series are 14x7 inches high or long, and each is priced $3.00. Five of the chromos are views of Yosemite Valley, "Yosemite Valley, Looking East from the Mariposa Trail," "Yosemite Valley, Looking West," "The Domes of the Yosemite," Bridal Veil Fall, Yosemite Valley" and "Nevada Fall, Yosemite Valley," and one is "Big Trees, Calaveras Grove." "Big Trees, Calaveras Grove" is number 9 of the "California Views." John Ross Key (1832-1920) "studied art in Munich and Paris before establishing a studio in Boston ... In 1869 he moved to San Francisco for a one year stay and concentrated on landscapes of Yosemite, Tahoe, Point Lobos, and the Mariposa Big Trees. His California works were lithographed by the Louis Prang Co. in the 1870s and at the 1876 Centennial in Philadelphia he received a gold medal for his oil of The Golden Gate" (Hughes, p. 254). Several tiny nicks to image, some scuffing along bottom edge of the print with loss of some letters of the imprint, good overall. The Prang California chromos are now uncommon in commerce.
