(#167913) Gentle wilderness the Sierra Nevada text from John Muir photographs by Richard Kauffman edited by David Brower. RICHARD KAUFFMAN, JOHN MUIR.

Gentle wilderness the Sierra Nevada text from John Muir photographs by Richard Kauffman edited by David Brower. San Francisco: Sierra Club, [1964]. 34.3x25.6 cm pp. [1] 2-167 [168: blank], 77 color illustrations, other illustrations in the text. original green cloth, front and spine panels stamped gold. First edition, first printing. The text is an abridged version of Muir's My First Summer in the Sierra which incorporates a number of small drawings reproduced from Muir's journal. Kauffman's color photographs capture the same feeling of discovery and vividness that Muir found characteristic of his "range of light." This photographic portrayal of the Sierra Nevada is equaled only by Ansel Adams' Sierra Nevada: the John Muir Trail (1938). The ninth volume in the Sierra Club's "Sierra Club Exhibit Format Series," edited by David Brower. Robinson 9. Jacket price $20 until 12-31-64 on the front flap along with the $25 price. A fine copy in very good dust jacket with light transfer from old style asphaltic-edged dust jacket protector along the bottom edge of the front panel and several tiny closed tears at edges. Still quite a presentable copy of a High Sierra classic. (#167913).
