First edition, first printing. Walter Augustus Starr, Jr. (1903-1933), a San Francisco lawyer and life member of the Sierra Club, conceived the idea of a comprehensive guide to the High Sierra in 1929. He spent his vacations and many weekends in the Sierra Nevada compiling data for the book and is estimated to have hiked at least 2,000 miles of High Sierra trails and knapsack routes prior to his fatal climbing accident in the Minarets in 1933. After Starr's death his father, Walter A. Starr, Sr., completed the guide utilizing his son's extensive notes. This was the first comprehensive guide to High Sierra trails. Reprinted and revised many times, it remains an important guide to trails in the central and southern Sierra. Includes a preface by Francis P. Farquhar, pages [v]-vi, and a tribute by Vincent Butler, pages [ix]-xiv. The map is "Map Prepared for use with Guide to the John Muir Trail and the High Sierra Region by Walter A. Starr, Jr.", drawn by W. B. Wheeler, printed in red, blue and black by Schwabacher-Frey Company. Robinson 20. A very good copy. (#167915).
