A portfolio of fifteen color prints from Gentle Wilderness: the Sierra Nevada by Richard Kauffman. San Francisco: Sierra Club, [1964]. 43.2x33.7 cm (17x13 1/4 inches) pp. [1-4], 15 plates, each captioned and signed in pencil by Kauffman, enclosed in a cardboard box covered with green paper with letterpress in dark green. First edition. "Ten of the prints in this portfolio are enlargements of prints in Gentle Wilderness, the other five are the same size. The pictures in the book and in the portfolio are produced by four-color offset lithography; however those in the portfolio are printed on a heavier art paper ... The original color prints that form the basis of Gentle Wilderness and of this portfolio were all made by the Carbro process -- a process permitting tonal values that range from delicate highlight to richest, deepest black. This process yields prints that retain their original color quality even when exposed to light over long periods of time. Color separation negatives were made from color negative film, either Kodacolor or Ektacolor, and then printed by the Carbro process ... In these prints, Mr. Kauffman has attempted to give the essence of what he has found to be beautiful in the Sierra Nevada" (quoted from the bi-fold text leaf). Kauffman's photographic portrayal of the Sierra Nevada is equaled only by Ansel Adams' Sierra Nevada: the John Muir Trail (1938). Some fading and soiling to box, contents fine. (168035).
