First edition. A souvenir album or parlor book with text in German and English, including German and American poetry, many with California themes. There is considerable Yosemite and Sierra Nevada content, including descriptions of Lake Tahoe, The Calaveras Grove of Big Trees, Yosemite Valley and Hetch-Hetchy Valley, pp. 13-15, 24-39. The seven lithographed illustrations (by an uncredited artist) are: "Our State Capitol," "Witches Cauldron and Devil's Pulpit; Sonoma County, Cal.," "Pluton Creek; Sonoma County, Cal.," "Looking Up Yo-Semite," "Yo-Semite Falls, 2.634 Feet High, and the Merced River," "The Vernal Fall, 350 Feet High -- From the Top, Looking Down" and "North Dome and Washington Tower." "An unusual item. Contains interesting plates illustrating Sonoma County scenes, Yosemite, etc. Also three poetical contributions by Joaquin Miller ..." (Norris catalogue 393). Includes translations of English poetry into German by C. J. Brick and considerable poetry in German by C. J. Brick and Emma Brick. Cowan (1933), p. 71. Gift inscription dated 1883 on front flyleaf. Cloth worn at spine ends and corners, occasional foxing and soiling, mostly early and late, hairline crack along inner front hinge, cracks at gutter margins between several signatures, still a sound copy.
