Eugene Camerer (1830-1898),German-born landscape and genre painter, studied at the Academy of Wurtenburg before traveling to the United States in the late 1840s. "When gold was discovered in California he sailed from New York arriving in San Francisco in the early 1850s. Unsuccessful in mining attempts , he moved to Stockton where he worked as a sign painter and later a portraitist. His views of Stockton, Yosemite, Mt. Shasta, and San Francisco were lithographed by Kuchel & Dresel Co. He returned to Germany about 1860 and remained in Stuttgart as a painter, printmaker, and teacher until his death in 1898" (Hughes, Artists in California 1786-1940, p. 78).
