Yosemite Valley. Season of 1894. Guide-book. Published by D. J. Foley. Price 25 cents [cover title]. Yosemite Valley, Cal. D. J. Foley, Compiler and Publisher, 1894. 14.5 cm, pp. [1], 2-46 [47-48: ads], 1 folded map, original light gray green wrappers printed in black. First edition. Foley published his first guide to Yosemite in 1892, shortly after his arrival in the valley. His second guide was published in 1894. In 1901 he published the first of fifteen annual (and some seasonal) issues of the Yosemite Souvenir and Guide, loosely modeled on his earlier guides, but considerably expanded with photographic illustrations, additional maps, and historical information. D. J. Foley, Yosemite publicist and photographer, was born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1857. In 1892 he moved from Pleasanton, California, where he published a newspaper, to Yosemite Valley where he established the Tourist Printing Office (later the Yosemite Falls Studio). In addition to preparing his Yosemite Souvenir and Guide he operated a photographic studio and published a newspaper, The Yosemite Tourist, which was issued during the summer months ("as often as the travel will justify its appearance, sometimes daily, at other times only three times a week") from 1892 until July 1934. Foley died in September 1934 at the W. B. Lewis Hospital in Yosemite Valley. Currey and Kruska 117. Wrappers a bit soiled, front wrapper detached, a very good copy. (#168521).
