The Society for the Preservation of National Parks was founded when William Colby's persuaded John Muir to form a conservation group to focus on the protection of the Hetch Hetchy Valley. Both the California and Eastern branches of the Society issued leaflets and circulars for broadcast distribution to newspapers and influential individuals. They were printed in large lots of 5,000 to 20,000 and were designed to be easily used by editorial writers or for fillers. William E. Colby and Edward T. Parsons compiled the pamphlet. Page [1] is a cover letter by Muir dated January 12, 1908; pages 2-3 comprise an open letter Society for the Preservation of National Parks, Let all the people speak ... page 2 addressed "To All Lovers of Nature and Scenery" dated December 21, 1908 and signed in type by John Muir, J. N. LeConte, Edward T. Parsons, and Wm. F. Badè; an article by Muir, " The Endangered Valley: the Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park," appears on pages 14-18. Also present are excerpts from newspapers and magazine editorials opposing the damming of Hetch Hetchy, remarks by former Interior Department secretaries Noble and Hitchcock, and a list of alternate sources for San Francisco's water supply.
