THE MIND ON THE WING A BOOK FOR READERS AND COLLECTORS by Herbert Faulkner West. New York: Coward-McCann, Inc., [1947]. 20.7x13.8 cm (octavo), pp. [i-viii] ix-xii [1-2] 3-308, original black cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. First edition. Chapter two, "The Literature of Mountaineering," pages 21-50, includes a brief account of Clarence King's MOUNTAINEERING IN THE SIERRA NEVADA (1872), which West says is still "one of the best American books on climbing." West's survey of mountaineering literature high spots concludes with the prescient observation that "the collector will find great joy in adventuring for himself in this practically virgin field." Chapter six, "Nature Writers," pages 139-176, includes brief, but perceptive, commentary on John Muir. A wonderful book by a fine teacher and bookseller and one of this cataloguer’s early mentors. Tiny nicks to the top edge of the front free endpaper and first three leaves, gold lettering on spine panel a bit dull, a very good copy in good dust jacket with wear and shallow chipping along top and bottom edges, latter mainly at spine ends, with internal tape ghosts to same. (#168593).
