(#169220) FANTASTIC TALES ... Edited and Translated by Lawrence Venuti. Iginio Ugo Tarchetti.

FANTASTIC TALES ... Edited and Translated by Lawrence Venuti. San Francisco: Mercury House, [1992]. Octavo, cloth. First edition. The first translation of any of Tarchetti's works into English. Winner of the Bram Stoker Award for Best Fiction Collection. Iginio Ugo Tarchetti (1839-1869), an Italian author, poet, and journalist, contracted tuberculosis and died in poverty at the age of 29. In addition to his own fiction, Tarchetti appropriated foreign texts in the Gothic tradition, such as works by E. T. A. Hoffmann, Edgar Allan Poe, Theophile Gautier and Mary Shelley, several of which are collected here. "Tarchetti's begiling fantasies are triumphs of imagination as well as masterfully told stories. A kind of Italian Poe, Tarchetti writes with comic bravura and surrealist invention that make him a cousin, at least, of Kafka and Isak Dinesen." - Guy Davenport. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. (#169220).
