N.p. [Philadelphia]: [E. P. and L. Restein], n.d. [Circa 1870s.]. Chromolithographs, all approximately 14.5x19.5 cm (5 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches). These small chromos of Yosemite Valley were published in the 1870s by E. P. and L. Restein. "North Dome [i.e. Half Dome] / Yosmetie [sic] Valley" has the publisher's imprint, "Restein's Oil Chromo," in the lower left corner of the plate. "South Dome [i.e. North Dome] & Washington Column. / Yosmetie [sic] Valley" has the publisher's imprint, "Restein's Oil Chromo, Phila." in the lower left corner of the plate. Additionally, to the right of the title is the imprint "National Chromo Co. Pub." "Merced River / Yosmetie Valley" has the imprint "Restein's Oil Chromo, Phila." in the plate at the lower right. The others have no publisher's imprint. These cheap prints often were used as promotional material by commercial firms (one example at AAS has an ink stamp: "Compliments of Wanamaker & Brown, Boys & Men's Clothing, Sixth & Market Sts. Phila.)." See, Peters, America on Stone, p. 332 who states "I have never seen a print by the Resteins." These chromos appear to be later impressions, but all of the Restein's Yosemite views are uncommon. (#169861).
