First edition, first printing. Stoddard's first book, compiled and edited by Bret Harte. The book, limited to 750 copies, was printed by San Francisco printer Edward Bosqui & Co. The illustrations are wood engravings from drawings by California landscape painter William Keith. See Walker, San Francisco's Literary Frontier, especially pages 228-233. Cowan (1933), p. 618. BAL 18971 (binding A). Gift inscription from "G.T.S" to "A.C.S." dated San Francisco, 9 April 1868 on the front free endpaper. Three of Keith's scenic views are neatly captioned in brown ink in a contemporary hand. Cloth gently rubbed, mild wear to spine ends, cloth bubbled near upper fore-edge corner of rear cover, internally clean, a very good copy. (#169862).
