Roman and Company, 1867. 22.2x14 cm (octavo), pp. [1-5] 6-7 [8-9] 10-11 [12-15] 16-123 [124: blank], five wood engravings with illustrations drawn by William Keith, other smaller head and tail pieces, title leaf printed in red and black, original bevel-edged green pebbled cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, yellow coated endpapers. First edition, first printing. Stoddard's first book, compiled and edited by Bret Harte. The book, limited to 750 copies, was printed by San Francisco printer Edward Bosqui & Co. The illustrations are wood engravings from drawings by California landscape painter William Keith. See Walker, San Francisco's Literary Frontier, especially pages 228-233. Cowan (1933), p. 618. BAL 18971 (binding A). Gift inscription from "G.T.S" to "A.C.S." dated San Francisco, 9 April 1868 on the front free endpaper. Three of Keith's scenic views are neatly captioned in brown ink in a contemporary hand. Cloth gently rubbed, mild wear to spine ends, cloth bubbled near upper fore-edge corner of rear cover, internally clean, a very good copy. (#169862).
