VIAGGI STRAORDINARISSIMI SATURNINO FARANDOLA NELLE 5 O 6 PARTI DEL MONDO ED IN TUTTI I PAESI VISITATI E NON VISITATI DA GIULIO VERNE. Opera illustrata da 450 disegni. Milano: Casa Editrice Sonzogno, . Octavo, pp. [1-3] 4-804, many illustrations, pictorial cloth. First edition in Italian. A translation of VOYAGE TRÈS EXTRAORDINAIRES DE SATURNIN FARANDOUL ..., a long quasi-Gulliverian work that was part parody and part tribute in respect of its Vernian inclusions. A major work of French science fiction, and Robida's first novel, a work first published in 100 parts in 1879 which were rebound and reissued in 1880 as an 800-page paperbound book. The novel was never reprinted again thereafter in France. This Italian edition appears to be the only translation of the work; a silent movie version of part of the text was made in Italy in 1914 by Marcel Perez. During his worldwide adventures Saturnin Farandoul meets Jules Verne's characters, Captain Nemo, Phileas Fogg, Hector Servadac (this segment is interplanetary fiction), Michel Strogoff and Captain Hatteras. Cloth worn at edges and quite dusty, pulpy text paper tanned (mostly edges), internally fine. A reasonable alternate to the virtually unobtainable French edition. (#169897).
