(#170004) THE HIDDEN PICTURE. A NOVEL. Carrick F. Brodie.

THE HIDDEN PICTURE. A NOVEL. London: Remington and Co., New Bond Street, W., 1884. Octavo, two volumes: pp. [1-4] [1] 2-280; [1-4] [1] 2-263 [264: blank], original pictorial gray green cloth, front panels stamped in black, spine panels stamped in gold, floral endpapers printing in gray. First edition. "Set during the early 1800s when Napoleon's forces have established and occupy the Kingdom of Naples in Italy, THE HIDDEN PICTURE is a Gothic romance about the doomed relationship between Claud, a captain of the French dragoons, and Nina, the daughter of Lorenzo Castellano, a duke whom the French consider a rebel and a traitor. Nina bears an uncanny resemblance to 'Nina the Beautiful,' an ancestor from several hundred years earlier who laid a curse on the Castellano family and whose vengeful spirit is believed to appear whenever a male member of the Castellano family is going to die. Nina believes she is possessed by her ancestor's spirit, and 'the hidden picture' of the novel's title refers to portrait of Nina the Beautiful hidden behind a secret wall panel in the Castellano mansion. While the novel contains several uncanny scenes involving dreams, legends, and discussions of the spirit world, THE HIDDEN PICTURE is not supernatural" (Boyd White). Not in Sadleir or Wolff. Cloth rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, hairline cracks along hinges of volume two which are still holding tight, a very good copy. A very nice copy. (#170004).
