Yosemite Valley [box title].

Yosemite Valley [box title]. New York, London, Toronto, Canada, Ottawa, Kansas: Underwood & Underwood, Publishers, n.d. [1902]. A collection of twenty-four stereoscopic views. One view is copyright 1901, the remainder have 1902 copyright dates. The cards have the "Sun Sculpture Trademark" logo. Accompanied by a small paper bound book, Yosemite Valley Through the Stereoscope Personally Conducted by Charles Quincy Turner Formerly Editor of Outing[.] New York, London, Toronto, Ottawa, Kansa[s], Toronto, Canada: Underwood & Underwood, n.d. [cop. 1902]. 17.3x8.8 cm, pp. [1-2: blank] [1-5] 6-70, folded map, brown wrappers printed in black, stapled. The twenty-four cards and booklet are enclosed in the publisher's brown cloth covered paper box, stamped in silver. The map, 47.3x28.7 cm, printed in black and red, is "Yosemite Valley Showing Wagon-Roads and Trails Copyright 1902, by Underwood & Underwood, New York." In his guide to Yosemite Valley that accompanied this Underwood & Underwood set of stereoscopic views, Turner claimed that one could, "by the use of the stereographs of the park and the special map accompanying this booklet, although never having visited the park, obtain an experience so vivid as to be similar in all essential respects to that by a person actually present." Images are fine; no silvering. The map in the book (printed on very delicate paper stock) has a small tear at one intersection where glued into the book. There are a couple of bug nibbles to the lower margin of the last two leaves. The cloth box is rubbed. Sets of these stereos with the booklet are very scarce. (#170048).
