GLIMPSES IN THE TWILIGHT BEING VARIOUS NOTES, RECORDS, AND EXAMPLES OF THE SUPERNATURAL. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, MDCCCLXXXV [1885]. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-3] 4-456, original pictorial blue cloth, front panel stamped in black and light brown, spine panel stamped in gold, rear panel ruled in black, top edge untrimmed, dark gray coated endpapers. First edition. A compendium of supernatural phenomena similar to Catherine Crowe's THE NIGHT SIDE OF NATURE (1849). A work exposing the "dangers of the practising the black art, and of seeking intercourse with, or aid from, fallen spirits," that supplements the Rev. Lee's two volume compilation GLIMPSES OF THE SUPERNATURAL (1875). Regarding this earlier work the Saturday Review remarked: "He makes no secret of his own profound faith in the reality of the phenomena he is handling ... But it is not at all necessary to agree with his conclusions in order to take an interest in the work ... We are certainly not aware of any work which affords so copious or well-arranged an assortment of material bearing on the subject." Cloth lightly rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, a tight, very good copy. A lovely copy of a scarce book. (#170207).
