(#170218) VAMPIRES OVERHEAD. Alan Hyder.

VAMPIRES OVERHEAD. London: Philip Allan, [1935]. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5 [6] 7-248 [249-256: ads], original orange cloth, spine panel stamped in black. First edition. Apocalyptic horror thriller, issued in conjunction with "Creeps" series; alien vampires come to earth via comet, devastate civilization. In one sense low-grade Wellsian SF, but highly entertaining in its own roughhewn fashion, also anticipating Colin Wilson's THE SPACE VAMPIRES by 40-odd years. "... Remarkable ... told with very considerable vigor." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 607. "Strange and effective," number 3 of 13 best science fiction horror novels cited by Karl Wagner (TWILIGHT ZONE, August 1983). Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-559. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 120. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 68. Bleiler (1978), p.106. Reginald 07680. Mild tanning to pulpy text paper, bookseller's penciled notes on the front free endpaper, a very good copy in very good pictorial 2/6 dust jacket with wear and associated shallow loss along top and bottom edges, mainly at spine ends and corner tips and remnant of a later price sticker affixed to the spine panel. A nice example of this stunning jacket. (#170218).
