Small octavo, pp. [1-9] 10-217 [218: floral cut] + 8-page publisher's catalogue inserted at rear, illustrations, original terra cotta decorated cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, rear panel stamped in blind, yellow coated endpapers. Later printing. Erckmann-Chatrian's core weirds are found in this collection. Most, if not all the stories are from CONTES DES BORDS DU RHIN (Paris 1862). Includes "Black and White" and "The Child-Stealer." Bleiler (1978), p. 69. Reginald 02906. An early printing of this book with owner's signature dated 1880 on the first free endpaper.
