THE MONK A ROMANCE. London: Gibbings & Company, 1906. Small octavo, three volumes, nine inserted plates with etchings by R. C. Armour, original publisher's decorated cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, t.e.g., other edges untrimmed. Later edition. A standard edition with first edition text augmented with "the author's corrections of his own grammatical slips and of printer's errors excepted, with all the additions, footnotes, etc., of the fourth. The textual changes made in the second edition in answer to the public criticism of the time and to remove the objections raised by the author's father are set out in the notes to each volume" (publisher's note). An anonymous 41-page introduction precedes the text of the novel with notes and "collation of author's alterations" at the rear of each volume. Frank, The First Gothics 244. A fine copy. A lovely copy of an attractive Edwardian edition of this classic monastic shocker. (#170383).
