(#170517) Yosemite and the Mariposa Big Trees[.] First among all California vacations [cover title]. YOSEMITE PARK AND CURRY COMPANY.

Yosemite and the Mariposa Big Trees[.] First among all California vacations [cover title]. [Yosemite National Park, California: Yosemite Park and Curry Co.], n.d. [circa early 1930s]. 23 x 20.4 cm, folded to 23 x 10.2 cm, pp. [1-16] (not paginated), 28 illustrations (including 2 cover illustrations), 2 maps, printed in double columns, self wrappers, stapled. Advertising brochure, undated but similar to one dated 1931, printed in orange, blue and black, promising "much more than world famous scenery. Endless pastimes, spring ... summer ... autumn ... winter ... All year round it's the perfect setting for happy restful days," and promoting guest services, including auto and saddle trips, transportation to Yosemite National Park by train or automobile, and accommodations and rates for hotels, lodges and camps in the park. This is a variant of another undated brochure with the same cover illustration, but there is some modification of the text, including the list of Yosemite folders and booklets, ten of which are listed on the outer rear panel. There is "construction work" on the Wawona road and no mention of the Wawona tunnel, so the brochure was probably issued before 1933. The maps are a two-page topographic/pictorial map, "Gateways to Yosemite National Park, showing the routes of the Yosemite Transportation System," and a smaller inset map of California showing highway and railroad routes. The "gateways" map was drawn by American artist Della Taylor Hoss (1900-1997), who lived in Yosemite Valley from 1928 until 1942 with her husband, Herman Hoss, a Federal Magistrate and the treasurer of Yosemite Park and Curry Company. Della drew several pictorial posters and maps of Yosemite and illustrated Mary Curry Tresidder’s Trees of Yosemite (1932) with thirty-four Art Deco-style linoleum block prints of trees and cones. Peck-Judah rubber stamp on front panel. A very good copy. (#170517).
