First edition. Possibly a presentation copy, inscribed by Capes on the verso of the front free endpaper dated September 1899 and signed "B. C." A historical novel set during the French Revolution, concentrating on the maniacal period of The Terror. Cloth rubbed and spotted, a tight, internally clean, very good copy. (#170730).
