First U.S. edition. The author's fourth novel, preceded by THE HAUNTED TOWER (1888), THE MISSING MAN (1889), both published under the pen-name "Bevis Cane," and THE MILL OF SILENCE (1897). THE LAKE OF WINE, a long, sometimes quite macabre tale of a cursed ruby, won a writing competition in 1898 and launched Capes' literary career when it was published by Heinemann later the same year.
