(#171454) A ROMANCE OF THE IMAGINATION. Eleanor Gaunt.

A ROMANCE OF THE IMAGINATION. London: Digby, Long & Co., Publishers, n.d. [1894]. Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1] 2-64, original green cloth, front and rear panels embossed with floral pattern, spine and front panels lettered in gold, all edges untrimmed, gray coated endpapers. First edition. "Sentimental ghost novella, ruined abbey haunted by long-dead monks, visible only to psychic girl. A slight, rather morbid little book, suffused with late Victorian obsession with 'that which lay over the borderland.'" – Robert Knowlton. The story's conclusion, with the death of the heroine, and an earnest warning to the reader about "the obvious peril of indulging too far in [introspection]" and dismissing the ghosts of the monks as "creatures of an overheated brain" brings a note of unintentionally hilarious bathos to what might otherwise have been a charming little tale. Not in the standard fantasy checklists or the Eaton catalogue. Early gift inscription dated Christmas 1894 on half title leaf. Cloth rubbed at edges, small spot on front cover, spine panel tanned, a very good copy. Rare. (#171454).
