THE STARTLING EXPLOITS OF DR. J. B. QUIES. From the French ... by Mrs. Cashel Hoey and Mr. John Lillie. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1887. Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [ix] x-xi [xii] [1] 2-328 [1]-8: ads, fly leaves at front and rear, 120 illustrations by F. Lix, original pictorial blue cloth, front panel stamped in gold, silver, gray and red, spine panel stamped in gold and silver, brown coated endpapers. First U.S. edition. Humorous imaginary voyage novel (mostly the African interior) in imitation of Verne's voyages extraordinaires, the illustrations in the caricaturist tradition of Daumier. No fantastic content to speak of, though the frontispiece has a nice phantasmagorical depiction of a nightmare. Cloth lightly worn at spine ends and corner tips, a tight, bright, very good copy. (#173405).
