A JOURNEY TO THE NORTH POLE ... With 129 Illustrations by Riou. London and New York: George Routledge and Sons, 1875 [i.e. 1874]. Octavo, pp. [i-iii] iv [1] 2-314, 129 illustrations, some full-page inserted plates, with illustrations by Riou, publisher's pictorial green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, rear panel stamped in blind, salmon coated endpapers, all edges plain. First British edition. Translation of LES ANGLAIS AU POLE NORD: ADVENTURES DU CAPITAINE HATTERAS (1866). Comprises the first part of THE VOYAGES AND ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN HATTERAS. According to The American Catalogue, this 1875 Routledge edition of A JOURNEY TO THE NORTH POLE and the sequel, THE FIELD OF ICE, also dated 1875, were both released in 1874, though apparently not simultaneously; a note on page 314 of the earliest copies of the former (including this one) states that the latter "will shortly be published." A variant issue of this 1875 Routledge edition was titled THE ENGLISH AT THE NORTH POLE, status unknown to us, but probably a later issue or printing (Routledge reprints are titled THE ENGLISH AT THE NORTH POLE). Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 1-92. Bleiler (1978), p. 199. Reginald 14615A. Myers 58. Taves and Michaluk V004. Slight spine lean, corner tips rubbed, but a lovely copy. (#173584).
