TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEAS; OR, THE MARVELLOUS AND EXCITING ADVENTURES OF PIERRE ARONNAX, CONSEIL HIS SERVANT, AND NED LAND, A CANADIAN HARPOONER ... (Edition of James R. Osgood & Co.) Sold Only By Subscription. Boston: George M. Smith & Co., 1873. Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi-x [xi] xii-xiii [xiv-xvi] [1-3] 4-303 [304: blank], 110 illustrations by Alphonse Marie du Neuville and Edouard Riou, publisher's pictorial green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, rear panel ruled in blind, all edges plain. First printing of the Smith edition. A translation (by Louis Mercier) of VINGT MILLE LIEUES SOUS LES MERS (1870). There were three printings of the Smith edition, the first dated 1873, the second dated 1874 and the last dated 1875. Smith's edition was preceded by Osgood's small edition published in November 1872 with a title page dated 1873. The Osgood edition is quite scarce. It is likely that it was made up from sets of sheets of the British Sampson Low edition which was also published in November 1872. This seminal science fiction novel is one of Verne's best-known works. Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 1-95 and (2004) II-1183. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2231. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 769. Survey of Science Fiction Literature V, pp. 2329-33. Suvin, Victorian Science Fiction in the UK, p. 18. In 333. Bleiler (1978), p. 199.
