Spreckels, the San Diego and Arizona Railway was one of the most expensive railroads in the U.S. at the time, costing nearly $19 million. The 148-mile short-line railroad connecting San Diego, California, to El Centro, California, was built to provide San Diego with direct transcontinental rail access without detouring through Los Angeles. It was dubbed "The Impossible Railroad" due to its treacherous, mountainous route. The railroad, completed in 1919, was sold to the Southern Pacific in 1932 and renamed San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway. A few light corner creases, a very good copy. (#179159).
