(9) Correspondence and photographs, circa 1916-1917, concerning an emergency line car invented by Throop and C. M. Gray for use on the New York State Railways. This material was compiled by Henry G. Throop, a Cornell graduate (1905), who worked as a civil engineer in New York for most of his career, in compliance with a request from his boss, chief engineer W. J. Harvie, dated 25 January 1910 "to please arrange to write up a description of the New Shop, about all the facts of which, you will find were given in the Electric Railway Journal, only re-arrange them and put in any additional facts in regard to operations which you may be able to get hold of." Throop "joined the staff of Mr. W. J. Harvie on the West Shore electrification, in which he had charge of the field work and of the preparation of special reports. In the fall of 1908 he was appointed engineer of construction and records for the Syracuse (N. Y.) Rapid Transit Company and allied lines and assisted in the construction of the Wolf Street shops, extending substations, etc. After the consolidation of the lines as part of the New York State Railways he continued the same line of work under the title of engineer of buildings" (Electric Railway Journal, February 1913). Throop managed the major electrification project of this high-speed electrified interurban line between the Syracuse and Utica. Established in 1907, the line used a third rail pickup for power rather than the overhead electrification used in most street cars. It remained in business until 1930. The other component of the archive is correspondence and photographs for an emergency line car to service electric transmission lines for which Troop and a partner, C. M. Gray, made a patent application. Much of the correspondence relates to marketing this truck and interest from various parties to manufacture this or similar vehicles. Enclosed in green Wyckoff's loose leaf binder with manuscript paper labels, most items hole punched into the binder, other items loose. Some edge wear; two photographs split in half; overall very good. (#179161).
