Second edition. Although no edition or printing is indicated, this is the second edition according to Howes. An 82-page pamphlet promoting the resources of Northern California, packed with articles and statistics from various authoritative sources, including a long "prize" article "California as a Home for the Emigrant. A Brief Statement of its Public Lands, Wages, Climate, Agriculture, Manufacturers, Attractions and General Business" by John S. Hittell, a description of "Lands of the Central Pacific Railroad," and more (emphasis on agriculture in the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys, grain lands, etc.). The California Immigrant Union was founded in 1869 to promote emigration to California from the Eastern United States and from Europe. The first edition of the Union's brochure was published in 1870 (and did not have a map). William H. Martin was the General Agent for the California Immigrant Union which received support (including financing?) from the railroads, including the Central Pacific Railway and the Union Pacific Railway, and others. The large folded map, 17x70 cm (7 x 27 3/4 inches), is "Map of the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific R. R. Line & Connections the Short Line Route Between the East and the Far West." Howes C 36.
