SOUVENIR OF THE HOTEL DEL MONTE MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA. By W. C. Morrow. Presented with the Compliments of the Manager. N.p. [Monterey: Hotel Del Monte, George Schönewald, manager], n.d. [1889]. 25x19.5 cm (large octavo), pp. [1: blank] [2] [1-2] 3-31 [32-43] [44: blank] [first and last leaves pasted to front and rear wrappers], many illustrations, a mixture of wood engravings and photographs, including a fold-out double-sided frontispiece, maps, floor plans, publisher's pictorial lithographed wrappers printed green (lithographed by H. S. Crocker & Co.), stapled. First edition. Includes eight hotel floor plans, as well as a plan of the hotel grounds. The two full-page maps are "Guide to Monterey and Vicinity" and "Map Showing Routes to Del Monte, Monterey and Pacific Grove." On January 1, 1880, the first Southern Pacific Railroad passenger train arrived in Monterey. Six months later on June 10, 1880, the Pacific Improvement Company opened the Hotel Del Monte -- an upscale tourist resort. The arrival of rail service and the opening of the hotel launched the promotion of the Monterey Peninsula by the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Pacific Improvement Company as an appealing year-round tourist destination. Beyond the Sierra Nevada's world famous Yosemite Valley, few regions in the state rival the natural beauty of the Monterey Peninsula and it quickly became one of California's major resort areas. Rocq (1970) 5760. Wrappers worn at edges and soiled, some light scattered internal foxing, a good copy. (#179195).
