Early edition. An early, very elaborate souvenir album of photographs by F. Jay Haynes of the Yellowstone National Park, reproduced in photogravure by Chicago's Photo-Gravure Co. and printed and bound by Brown Treacy & Co. Art Printers & Binders. The photogravures are printed on thick paper with protective interleaves. Destined to become one of the most successful commercial photographers of the American West, Frank Jay Haynes (1853-1921) photographed extensively in the upper Midwest, along the Pacific coast, and the Missouri River region in the 1870s. He had studios in Moorhead, Minnesota; in Fargo, North Dakota; Yellowstone National Park; and in Saint Paul, Minnesota. His first photographs in Yellowstone Park were taken in 1881. He became the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883 and was provided with a studio and darkroom on rails built to his design for $13,000, the "Palace Car Studio." In 1884, he became the official photographer of Yellowstone National Park, opening his first studio at Mammoth Hot Springs. Light wear to cloth at spine ends and corner tips, some soiling and staining to cloth, interior clean throughout, a very good copy. (#179200).
