Grey's third book describes his Western adventures with Buffalo Jones (1844-1919), an American frontiersman, farmer, rancher, hunter, and conservationist, one of the great original preservers of American wildlife, especially the American bison. In 1907, Jones introduced the fledging author to the American Southwest. Grey modeled several of his characters after Jones and he is the central figure in the nonfiction books THE LAST OF THE PLAINSMEN and ROPING LIONS IN THE GRAND CANYON. Grey brought a camera to document his Western trips and took copious notes, not only of scenery and activities, but of dialogue. This experience allowed him to write convincingly about the American West, its characters, and its landscape. He later wrote, "Surely, of all the gifts that have come to me from contact with the West, this one of sheer love of wildness, beauty, color, grandeur, has been the greatest, the most significant for my work."
