[caption title]. [Washington, 1893.]. 22.5 cm, pp. [1] 2-82, extracted. First edition. At head of title: "52d Congress, 2d Session. Senate. Report No. 1248." The committee was appointed to investigate the situation of persons residing within the boundaries of the "forest reservations" in California established October 1, 1890. The investigation focused on Sequoia National Park and the Kaweah Colony, whose members had filed land claims in the Giant Forest area several years before the creation of the park. The report included statements by colony members, extracts from court transcripts, and text of newspaper articles about the colony. Pages 44-73 reprinted ... The Persecution of Kaweah ... (item 211), first printed in 1891 by the colony's Eastern Group. The committee recommended formation of a commission, with at least one appointment by the colony's secretary, to examine each claim within Yosemite and Sequoia national parks to determine fair compensation for the claimants. Senate Resolution 150 to establish the commission failed to pass and the Kaweah colonists received no compensation for the loss of colony lands and improvements. Currey and Kruska 351.
