(#20563) A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL. Eden Phillpotts.

A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL. New York: Frederick Warne & Co., n.d. [1895]. Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi [7] 8-190 [191: printer's imprint] [192: blank], flyleaves at front and rear, original pictorial yellow cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black, lower half of front cover reproduces an illustration by G. G. Manton, publisher's monogram stamped in black on rear panel, all edges stained yellow. First edition, U.S. issue. Except for preliminaries, the Warne issue is identical to the British issue published by Bliss, Sands and Foster. 1000 copies of the British issue were prepared; it is doubtful the U.S. issue was larger. "... short novel that exploits an ever-popular theme with surprisingly droll humor, the hero bargains with Satan to grow younger each day." - Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 3-198. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 2-138. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1770. Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 758-59. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 175. Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature I, pp. 355-57. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 409. Bleiler (1978), p. 158. Reginald 11481. Hinton, p. 10 (not noting a U.S. issue). Cloth dust soiled, still a tight, internally clean, very good copy. Donald A. Wollheim's copy with his name stamped in ink on rear free endpaper. An elusive book. (#20563).
