STUDIES AND STORIES. London: A. D. Innes & Co., 1893. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-256, inserted frontispiece with illustration by A. Leverett, original decorated gray cloth with olive green cloth overlay on front panel, spine and front panels stamped in olive green and gold, decorated endpapers with floral pattern printed in olive green, all edges untrimmed. First edition. A mixed bag of essays and fiction, with one ghost story "Old Gerrias," in which a ghost returns to do a good deed. Typically of Molesworth, the children hear his knock and speak to him, while the adults cower in fear. The other pieces include a humorous fairy tale, "Princess Ice-Heart," and essays on the children's fiction of Hans Christian Anderson and Mrs. Ewing. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 368. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992). Not in the Eaton catalogue. Pencil ownership signature on dedication page. Slight spine lean (a fault common to the book), short hairline crack along upper portion of inner front hinge, a bright, about near fine copy. A very nice, well above average copy of an uncommon book. (#76385).
