COLD STEEL. London: Grant Richards, 1899. Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [1] 2-372 + 20-page publisher's catalogue dated "MCM" inserted at rear, original pictorial tan cloth, front panel stamped in blue, orange, dark brown and black, spine panel stamped in dark brown and black, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. First edition with second state inserted publisher's catalogue (the first was dated 1899). Signed inscription by Shiel on front free endpaper: "Kings are without humour: my Henry VIII in / this, the first 'Defender of the Faith,' had six / wives, and was the champion of faithlessness / while the last Defender of the Faith, our / George V, being the fifth of his wife, has five / wives in one, so that when he reaches up and / kisses her he is being naughty with a harem. / But some day he will figure in a 'historical / novel': and this is what kings are for, as I / show here. / 1924. M. P. Shiel." Historical novel set during the reign of Henry VIII. Morse, The Works of M. P Shiel Updated (1980), p. 80. Cloth lightly dust soiled, minor darkening to endpapers, a tight, internally clean, very good copy. A nice copy of an attractive book. Enclosed in cloth sleeve and quarter orange pebbled morocco slipcase (a bit soiled). An uncommon book not often found signed or inscribed by Shiel. (#80442).
