AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS). 1 1/2 pages, dated 11 April 1930, to "My dear [Victor] Gollancz," signed "Arthur Machen." A fine letter to publisher Victor Gollancz from Machen who has finished reading an advance proof of Charles Williams' first novel, WAR IN HEAVEN (Gollancz 1930). "I have read 'War in Heaven' with the greatest interest & pleasure. An extraordinary book, & I hope it will be a great success. I wonder whether the author has seen 'The Great Return,' my essay on the same theme? If not I should be very glad to send him a copy ..." Machen encloses "some more 'Reader's Queries.' I hope it's not too late." Machen's sheet of penciled notes and corrections is present. Accompanied by a carbon of Gollancz's reply to Machen's letter: "... I am glad you enjoyed the book -- I knew you would. I have seen Williams this morning, and he tells me he would immensely like to read 'The Great Return' ... Ever so many thanks for the corrections. The majority had been 'spotted' ... but two of the Latin ones had slipped through ..." Faint mailing folds, tiny pin marks at upper left corners, else fine. (#96247).
