Base Camp 1957 [cover title]. N.p., n.d. [1957]. 21x28 cm (oblong octavo), pp. [i-x] 1-16 [1-2] A1-A59 [A60: blank] [1-2] B1-B41 [B42: blank] [1-2] C1-C52 + 13 leaves variously paginated, mimeographed from typewritten copy, 28 plates, other illustrations in text, 4 maps, pictorial wrappers, gray cloth tape spine. First edition. A keepsake of the 1957 Sierra Club Base Camps. Three camps were established: at Iron Mountain in the Minarets Wilderness Area southeast of Yosemite National Park; at State Lake in Kings Canyon National Park; and in the Selkirks, British Columbia, Canada. A miscellany of essays and reports on these regions compiled under the general editorship of Oliver Kehrlein. The last Sierra Club Base Camp miscellany. Includes general editor Kehrlein's historical summary "How Base Camp Just Growed," pages 1-16. The genesis of the base camps were Sierra Club Annual Outings, organized by William W. Colby, held in Tuolumne Meadows in 1901 and Kings Canyon in 1902. The camps were established in 1940 and held annually save for the war years 1943 and 1944. Apparently, a miscellany was prepared for all but the 1945 Base Camp. A fine copy. (#179385).
