Notes of a tour in America. From August 7th to November 17th, 1877, by H. Hussey Vivian, M.P., F.G.S. London: Edward Stanford, 55, Charing Cross, 1878. 22x14 cm (octavo), pp. [1-6] [i] ii-iii [iv-vi] [1] 2-260, inserted folded map, publisher's pictorial green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, rear panel stamped in blind, yellow coated endpapers. First edition. Trip to Yosemite, pages 156-168, with focus on mineral resources in the gold region and forested land in the timber belt, by Lord Swansea (1821-1894), a Welsh industrialist and politician. The short trip from San Francisco to the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees and the Yosemite Valley was made by rail and stage. A day was devoted to visiting the Mariposa Grove and another day in Yosemite Valley was spent riding "through the lovely park-like scene" in "quiet study of the beauties of the valley itself, the towering precipices above us, and the tall trees around us." Nisbet, British Comment on the United States: A Chronological Bibliography, 1832-1899 2248. Cloth lightly worn at spine ends and corner tips, some rubbing along outer rear joint, a very good copy. Provenance: A presentation copy inscribed by the author to his daughter on the verso of the front free endpaper: "Alexandra J. Vivian / From her Dearest Father." Quite a nice copy of an attractive book. (#179426).
