Second edition, enlarged. Copy number 119 of an unknown number of copies. At head of title: "Department of the Interior / National Park Service / Yosemite National Park." The number of copies produced of this impressive in-house work is unknown; this copy is number 119, but the title leaf of volume II states that "seventy-five copies of this, the second edition, were produced in April, 1929 ..." According to the title leaf of volume II, "In 1927, members of the Yosemite Educational Staff prepared the first typewritten edition of both volumes. It was put to practical use and revised by the Educational Department in 1928." Intended for "use by Ranger-Naturalists, Rangers, and others of the Yosemite personnel," the manual was designed to train NPS employees to interpret the Park to the public. "Their training should be in history and natural sciences, and the wider the training the better" (Horace M. Albright, director of the NPS, March 27, 1929). Among the many useful articles by the Park staff (Ansel F. Hall, Charles P. Russell, Harold C. Bryant, Enid Michael, Adolph Pabst and others), a standout is Russell's detailed chronology, "History of Human Events in Yosemite," keyed to sources, volume II, 1-34 leaves. Rubber-stamped name of (later?) owner on endpapers and edge of text block. Binding rubbed, internally sound and fine. (#179431).
