TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS). 1 page, dated 28 July 1978, to "Dear Kirby" [McCauley], signed "Brian Lumley" On Lumley's pictorial letterhead, with typed return address Bedhampton, nr. Havant, Hants. Refers to a miscellany of business matters. Has received SPAWN OF THE WINDS. "I like SPAWN, though there are a couple of places where the script has suffered through poxy interference! [underlined] But they paid me, so this time I'll say nothing." He is "nearly finished with the 2nd version of [RETURN OF THE] DEEP ONES" for Arkham House. "Then, if he turns this one down... we'll just sell it elsewhere. It's a good story. (I think)... "As for future projects: "I'll try [underlined] to do you something; but the silly season is on at the barracks and I'm up to my ears in work. Makes things difficult." Written with his characteristic tone of breezy good humor. Lumley, who started his career (like so many others) as a Lovecraft disciple, has been a prolific author of supernatural horror (of which his occult/Cold War Necroscope series is his best and best-known work), even while he was serving, as at this time, in the Royal Military Police. Kirby McCauley was probably the most important literary agent of horror, fantasy and sf writers in the boom years of the 1970s and 1980s. Faint creases where folded for mailing, a bit of creasing along upper edge, near fine. (#102651).
