The setting copy, 472 leaves, ribbon copy typed on rectos of letter-size bond, with numerous handwritten corrections by Lanier as well as copy editing and marks for the printer in an unknown hand. Lanier's second and most important novel, first published in 1973. A quest story, set in the North American wilderness 5000 years after an atomic war, in which the hero, priest, telepath and trained killer, searches for the lost powers of the ancients. A sequel, THE UNFORSAKEN HIERO, was published in 1983 and the two were then combined and published in 1984 as HIERO DESTEEN.
