First edition. The title leaf bears a printed copyright notice dated "September 29, 1890." The following leaf, headed "A Story of the North Pole Country," the novel's subtitle, bears the publisher's imprint and a 1893 publication date. The DLC copy was deposited 17 August 1893. Science fiction novel of the discovery of an ancient utopian civilization inhabiting the north polar region. There are a number of imaginative incidents, including a description of a novel method of execution of those who do not follow the prescribed religion: the victims are carried off by flying vampire-dragons to vast underground caverns where their blood is slowly drained.
