(#111936) NORTHWEST OF EARTH. Moore.
NORTHWEST OF EARTH.

NORTHWEST OF EARTH. New York: Gnome Press, Inc. Publishers, [1954]. Octavo, boards. First edition. Presentation copy with signed inscription by Moore on front free endpaper: "For Jean & Julie Schwartz / with the best wishes of / C. L. Moore". A significant inscription from a fine writer to an important editor, agent and fan in the science fiction field. Julie Schwartz, a fanzine publisher (along with close friend Mort Weisinger), opened the first literary agency to specialize in SF authors (with Weisinger) and later became an editor at DC comics where he played a major role in the revival of their super-hero line in the late 1950s. A collection of Moore's early melodramatic and uninhibited stories featuring Jirel of Joiry, pulp fiction's first sword-and-sorcery Amazonian warrior, and Northwest Smith, hero of a series of exotic space operas. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1192. Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature, pp. 805-07. Boards rubbed along lower edge, lower corner bumped, a very good to near fine copy in very good dust jacket with mild shelf wear and rubbing, and touch of fading to spine panel. A nice association copy. (#111936).
