A collection of short fiction published in the U.S. in Boston in 1891 by Benjamin R. Tucker as HOLIDAY STORIES. The Gay and Bird edition adds the title story and "Amateur Theatricals" to the nine collected in HOLIDAY STORIES. The stories, range from the Horatio Algerish "Paddy from Cork" to a detective tale, "The Sealskin Sacque." In "An American Ghost," a romantic triangle follows a couple from New Hampshire to the Wisconsin frontier, with tragic results; a supernatural element (ghosts) is eventually rationalized. "A Happy Escape" is set in Tunis during the American Civil War. See Wright (III) 1878.
