MYSTIC ROMANCES OF THE BLUE AND THE GREY: MASKS OF WAR, COMMERCE AND SOCIETY. PICTURES OF REAL LIFE SCENES ENACTED IN THIS AGE, RARELY SURPASSED IN THE WILDEST DREAMS OF FICTITIOUS ROMANCE. New York: Mutual Publishing Company, [1883]. Large octavo, pp. [1-9] 10-324, flyleaves at front and rear, eight inserted plates, original pictorial stiff card wrappers printed in brown and black. First edition. Novel following the fortunes of a Confederate soldier, Garland Cloud, including several adventures with supernatural elements, angels, ghosts, etc. Written in a spirit of reconciliation between North and South. Interesting in the author's call for writers to exploit the romance inherent in the here and now of America rather than material from the Old World. Branscom's style, unfortunately, hews to the inflated rhetoric of old models. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992). Wright (III) 657. Boards rubbed at edges, small chips from spine ends and upper front corner, a sound copy of a very fragile book. (#114558).
