A complete set of this anthology collecting forty-two stories, some supernatural or fantastic, most written by British authors, including Thomas Hardy ("The Three Strangers"), F. Anstey ("The Black Poodle"), Wilkie Collins ("She Loves and Lies") Juliana H. Ewing ("Lob Lie-by-the Fire"), Robert Louis Stevenson, Charles Reade, William Black, Walter Besant and James Rice, James Payne, Hugh Conway, and others. The anthology is notable for the inclusion in volume four (correctly dated 1885) of "Bones," the first story by A. Conan Doyle to appear in a book. Green and Gibson C79. Early owner's signatures dated May 1885 or May 1886 on front free endpaper of each volume. Spines leaned, cloth rubbed at edges, some spotting to front and rear covers of volumes one and two, some scuffing to front and rear covers of volumes one, two and three, a very good set overall.
