A deluxe printing of Rhodes' genre classic "The Case of Summerfield," first published in the SACRAMENTO DAILY UNION, 13 May 1871 and later collected CAXTON'S BOOK: A COLLECTION OF ESSAYS, POEMS, TALES AND SKETCHES BY THE LATE W. H. RHODES, a posthumous literary miscellany published in 1876. Anthony Boucher reprinted this story in the summer 1950 issue of the MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION, terming Rhodes "in this and other stories one of the great pioneers of modern science fiction."
